Understanding Innovation & Technology

Aravind By  January 14, 2024

Hello friends! Today, let’s talk about two big words that can make a huge difference for any business, big or small: Innovation and Technology. Don’t worry, we will explain them in a way even a 10-year-old can understand, with examples right from our own Tamil Nadu!

Think of it like this: your business is a delicious idli shop. How can you make more people eat your idlis, make them faster, or make them even tastier? That’s where innovation and technology come in!

What is Innovation?

Innovation is simply finding a new and better way to do things. It’s about thinking differently to solve a problem or make something better. It doesn’t always mean inventing something brand new; sometimes it’s just a smart change.

  • Example 1: The Smart Tailor Shop in Chennai
Imagine “Karthik Tailors” in T. Nagar. For years, they took measurements with a tape and wrote orders in a book. This was slow. Karthik, the owner, innovated! He started using a special app on a tablet. Customers could see different designs, choose fabrics, and measurements were saved digitally. This wasn’t a new machine, but a new way of working. It made things faster, more accurate, and customers loved the modern feel. Karthik got more customers because of this simple, smart change.
  • Example 2: The Unique Juice Shop in Madurai
“Saravana Juice Stall” in Madurai was like any other. But the owner, Saravana, noticed people wanted healthy options quickly. He innovated by creating special “immunity booster” juice combinations using local fruits and herbs like amla and ginger, and started selling them in pre-packed, easy-to-carry bottles for office-goers. This new product and convenient packaging was an innovation that attracted many new customers looking for quick, healthy drinks.

What is Technology?

Technology is about using tools and systems to make tasks easier, faster, or more powerful. These tools can be anything from a simple calculator to a complex computer program or a smartphone app. Technology is often what helps us bring our innovations to life.

  • Example 1: The Local Veggie Vendor and UPI
Remember the vegetable vendor, “Mani Mama,” near your home in Coimbatore? Earlier, everyone paid him with cash. Sometimes, he didn’t have change, or people didn’t have exact money. Mani Mama adopted technology: he started using UPI payment (Google Pay, PhonePe). Now, customers just scan a QR code and pay instantly. This made his work easier, safer (less cash to handle), and customers found it super convenient. His sales even went up because people didn’t need to worry about cash.
  • Example 2: The Small Bakery’s Online Orders in Trichy
“Priya’s Bakery” in Trichy used to get orders only by phone or walk-in. Priya, the owner, started using a simple WhatsApp Business account. Customers could browse her cake designs, place orders, and even get delivery updates directly on WhatsApp. This simple technology helped her reach more customers beyond her neighborhood and manage orders better, leading to more business.

How Innovation and Technology Work Together for Your Business

Innovation is the new idea, and technology is the helper that brings that idea to life. They are like two best friends working together.

If Karthik, the tailor, had the idea to manage orders digitally (innovation), he needed a tablet and an app (technology) to do it. If Mani Mama had the idea to make payments easier (innovation), he needed UPI (technology) to make it happen.

When you combine them, you get amazing results:

  • More Customers: By offering new ways to buy or new products (innovation) supported by easy-to-use tools (technology), you attract more people.
  • Save Money & Time: Using smart tools (technology) to do tasks in a better way (innovation) means you spend less time and money. For example, automated billing software for a supermarket in Erode saves hours of manual work.
  • Better Customer Experience: When things are easy and fast for your customers, they are happier and keep coming back. Think of how easy online ticket booking is for bus travel in Tamil Nadu compared to standing in long queues.
  • Stay Ahead of Others: In today’s fast world, businesses that use innovation and technology smartly are always a step ahead of their competitors. If a local hardware store in Tirunelveli starts offering home delivery through an app, while others don’t, they win more customers.

Simple Steps to Bring Innovation & Technology to Your Business

You don’t need a huge budget or fancy degrees. Start small!

  1. Look at Your Daily Work: What takes a lot of time? What causes problems? Is it customer waiting time? Or managing inventory? Identify one small area.
  2. Think of a New Way (Innovate): Brainstorm with your team. How can we make this specific thing better or faster? Can we use a register, a phone, or a simple software?
  3. Find a Simple Tool (Technology): Is there a mobile app, a simple software, or even a different way to use your existing phone that can help? Start with free or low-cost options like WhatsApp Business, Google My Business, or UPI.
  4. Try it Out: Don’t wait for perfection. Try your new way with a few customers or for a few days. See what works and what doesn’t.
  5. Learn and Improve: Based on what you learn, make small changes and keep improving.

For example, if you run a small apparel shop in Salem and find managing stock difficult, you could innovate by creating a simple spreadsheet on a computer to track inventory. This is a small step in technology (spreadsheet software) applied to an innovation (digital stock management) that saves you time and reduces errors.

Innovation and Technology are not just for big companies in Bangalore or Mumbai. They are powerful tools for every business right here in Tamil Nadu, from a small tea shop in Kanyakumari to a large textile factory in Tiruppur. By embracing them, you can build a stronger, more successful business and serve your customers better.
